Description

As the oldest surviving city in Colombia, Santa Marta is steeped in history with its 16th century colonial style architecture and museums showcasing the city’s rich past and contrasting with its lively and colorful present. The city is also an excellent base for exploring the stunning natural wonders of the region, including the famous Tayrona National Park and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, home for several indigenous communities who preserve the area. The beautiful beaches of Santa Marta are also a major draw for tourists, with crystal-clear waters and golden sands providing the perfect setting for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, nature, or simply relaxing by the sea, Santa Marta has something for everyone.

Start by strolling the Historical Center of Santa Marta, where you will find buildings between colonial and republican style, travel from the discovery, the conquest, and the war against the monarchy. The Historical Center of Santa Marta is a small portfolio of all the national history of Colombia.

Visit the Gold Museum or Old Customs Office, where the liberator Simón Bolívar was received upon his arrival to the city of Santa Marta.
Santa Marta’s Cathedral is one of the architectural masterpieces of the city. It is the oldest cathedral in Colombia, where Simón Bolívar was buried before being transferred to his hometown. Currently, among its beautiful stained-glass windows and marble floors, lies the remains of the founder of the city: Rodrigo de Bastidas.
Visit Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, a former sugar mill where Simón Bolívar spent his last days. Inside this vast hacienda, you’ll be able to appreciate an art collection and a beautiful botanical garden.
Finally get to the Taganga viewpoint: Taganga is a renowned fishing village in Colombia. Famous for the artisanal fishing tradition of its inhabitants.
