This educational and exciting tour will take you to visit the neighborhood of Comuna 13.
Nowadays, it’s known all over the country for its beautiful street art – but there’s a lot more to this neighborhood than pretty murals and selfie spots. In the late 90’s, Comuna 13 was considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Colombia, being Medellin, the headquarters of the drug cartel led by notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar, the most dangerous city in the country.
Tourists didn’t dare to set foot here, they had no reason to, and many locals, as our professional tour guide will explain you, were too ashamed to admit that they lived in those shabby suburbs that were symbol of violence, prostitution, and drug trafficking.
Nowadays, it’s a very different story. Over the past decade, Comuna 13 has undergone a complete transformation thanks to rigorous government intervention.
After the government and private sector invested in social and youth programs, local residents and artists took back the neighborhood and contributed to the miraculous transformation we see today, the streets were filled with incredible works of street art, music, and delicious local snacks. Get to know the relationship between the criminal groups, violent past with the new generation, the overcoming of a civil war and a new hope for the community.
Modern infrastructure has been introduced such as a cable car system and six outdoor escalators. This has made life in Comuna 13 a whole lot easier for residents and opened the area up to tourists like never before.
