Description 

Enjoy this wonderful tour in Guatape-Antioquia, a beautiful town located just 84 km from the city of Medellin, surrounded by a gigantic dam which gave way to one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the country.

As we journey through the countryside, you’ll have the chance to visit the Big Scale Replica of the Old Peñol Town, a fascinating recreation of a traditional Colombian village. The original town was completely evacuated to another area nearby and submerged by the flooding of the Guatape’s dam.

From there, you will drive to the famous rock of Peñol Also known as Peñón de Guatapé. This 220m/722 feet high monolith takes 740 steps to reach its summit. The monolith is composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. It was climbed for the first time on July 16, 1954 by an inhabitant of the area, Luis Eduardo Villegas López and since then, the giant monolith that attracts visitors from all over the world, still belongs to the Villegas family.

The stone has become the main tourist attraction of the area, as the view from the top allows you to enjoy the lush beauty of one of the most important hydroelectric energy sources of Colombia where 70% of the hydroelectric power in the country is generated.

Finally the tour includes a visit to the charming town of Guatape, where we’ll walk through its main streets and plazas, exploring its vibrant colors and colonial architecture. You’ll have the opportunity to shop for local handicrafts and souvenirs, and to soak up the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that characterizes this unique town.
